9 Reasons Why You Can Donate With
Confidence to the MS Society of Canada
Canadians have given the MS Society
their trust since 1948. Today, on an annual basis, more
than 1 million donors and 100,000 local volunteers and
event participants give their time and money to the MS
Society. We are proud of this support and of our long
history of dedicated service to the MS community.
We abide by the highest standards available in
Canada, adhering to the Association of Professional Fundraisers
Code of Ethical Principles. The MS Society also passes,
with no issue, routine audits by the Canada Revenue Agency
(CRA) who oversee the charitable sector in this country.
Our signature events – The Super
Cities WALK for MS, RONA MS Bike Tour, MS
Carnation Campaign and
the MS Read-A-Thon – are
organized, well-run fundraisers. They also help raise
the profile of a disease that impacts 55,000 to 75,000
Canadians who live with MS. By donating through any of
these events, you galvanize the public to support us
even more. This moves us one step closer to the ultimate
goal of ending MS.
An independent Canadian accounting firm, Pricewaterhouse
Coopers, audits the MS Society’s finances annually.
Our complete audited financial statements are available
to our supporters and to the public upon request by calling
1-866-922-6065. An abridged version is available in our annual
report.
We
were founded by volunteers and are volunteer run.
These volunteers demand the highest standards of accountability.
In fact, our boards and
audit committees
are comprised of chartered accountants, auditors and
other professionals who are involved in the financial
services industry.
The MS Society does not use commission-based fundraising
techniques. To maintain our high ethical standard when
it comes to fundraising, we rely on grassroots events,
personal and corporate gifts and the goodwill of Canadians
impacted by MS.
Whether you donate by mail, online, phone or in
person, you can be sure that your funds are safe and
that your personal information is kept private. The Multiple
Sclerosis Society uses the latest technology to ensure
the integrity and privacy of any information you provide.
The MS Society is highly efficient by necessity as
we receive virtually no government funding. We raise 96%
of our revenue independently through personal and corporate
donations. As such, we are careful stewards of all donations.
We have extensive oversight and control mechanisms to
ensure every dollar raised is used to maximum benefit.
In 2006/07, over $10 million was spent on services
for our clients and an additional $10 million was spent on
research and MS clinics to find the cause of and cure for
multiple sclerosis. MS Society of Canada fundraising has
supported over $100 million in research projects since
1948.
